Meet Jamie Wake: Champion of the LGBT+ Community and Founder of Wide Awake Holidays

March 6, 2025

Hello, I’m Jamie Wake, a very proud member of the LGBT+ community and incidentally the founder of Wide Awake Holidays. Professionally, I entered the travel industry when I first left school completing an NVQ Level 2 in Travel Services and World Wide Fares and Ticketing, and then taking a train from South Sheen in West London to Eltham every day for my first job as a travel agent which cost more me more in travel than I actually earned! On a personal level, my journey to get where I am today has been anything but conventional (drag queen to leatherman anyone?), shaped by personal experiences and a deep commitment to fostering inclusivity and connection within our community.

My introduction to drag was serendipitous. Trained as an actor, I was once persuaded to don drag for a performance. The response was overwhelming—audiences were captivated, particularly by my legs! Embracing this newfound persona, I began performing as ‘Sue Panover.’ The name itself was born from a candid moment with friends, where, amidst complaints about my workload, I jested about being a ‘dying star,’ akin to a supernova. Laughter ensued, and thus, ‘Sue Panover’ was christened.

Over time, my drag persona evolved beyond performance; it became a platform for activism. I aimed to challenge stereotypes and advocate for greater representation and acceptance within the community.

The leather community intrigued me for years, but it took considerable courage to immerse myself fully. My affection for leather was longstanding, yet attending leather social events felt daunting. However, embracing this aspect of my identity led to profound personal growth and a deeper understanding of the diverse facets within our community.

Crowning Moments: Mr. Leather UK

In 2016, shortly after the untimely passing of my husband, I decided to honor his memory by competing in the Mr. Leather UK competition. He had once quipped about me being ‘hunk of the week’ in a magazine, joking that I might as well run for the title. Motivated by love and remembrance, I entered and secured the runner-up position. The following year, I returned and clinched the title. My victory sparked debate, with some questioning my masculinity. I viewed this as an opportunity to demonstrate that the leather community is inclusive, embracing individuals from all walks of life.

Building Community Connections

Believing in the power of community, I served as the CEO of Club F.O.D, a charity dedicated to preventing and reducing social isolation within the LGBT+ community. I was also asked to help organise and host events like the Worldfetish Show Contest, which began during the lockdown to bring people together. These experiences reinforced my commitment to fostering environments where everyone feels valued and connected.

My mantra, “Dare to be Different, Be happy in the Skin you’re in, and even though Leather may be on the outside, it’s the Leatherman on the inside that counts,” encapsulates my belief that true worth lies within. It’s a reminder to look beyond external appearances and embrace the diversity that makes us unique.

The year I held the Mr. Leather UK title was transformative. Despite my inherent shyness and social anxiety, the role propelled me into new experiences and global connections. It was less about personal glory and more about representing our community and challenging preconceived notions. This journey also inspired the creation of Club F.O.D , aiming to provide safe spaces for those who might feel marginalized.

Now residing in the serene Welsh Valleys, life has taken on a quieter pace. However, my dedication to the community remains steadfast. I’m committed to expanding Torfaen Pride , an event that celebrates the rich diversity of our region’s LGBT+ residents. Additionally, I’m excited about growing Wide Awake Holidays, ensuring that our travel experiences continue to be inclusive and enriching for all.
